New section of Pier 22: Recovery and Sports open on the water!
Pier 22, 1220 Wien, Österreich - On June 16, 2025, the second section of the leisure area "Pier 22" on the new Danube was ceremoniously opened. This opening took place in the presence of planning and water councilor Ulli Sima, district manager Ernst Nevrivy and Neos club chairwoman Selma Arapovic. After comprehensive redesign work, an area of around 8,000 square meters is now available for sports and relaxation, which increases the total area of "Pier 22" to around 13,000 square meters. The concept includes free bathing accesses and numerous recreation areas that enrich the water experience in Vienna.
The new section places a special focus on sports and fitness offers. A covered sports area will be opened in the near future, which can be used for training and events. In the current season, two out of three new festivals, supplemented by mobile food trucks, open visitors with culinary offers. In addition to a new "outdoor café" that offers regional and South American specialties, healthy snacks are served in the "Café Pier 22" that is open all year round.
redesign of the Waterfront
The area is redesigned as part of a comprehensive project that is also known as "Sunken City". This international redesign of the former “Sunken City” towards a modern water front is progressing as scheduled. The first construction phase was completed in the summer of 2024 and includes barrier -free bathing platforms, lying areas and consumption -free areas. The city of Vienna divided the project into three phases, whereby the second construction phase started in autumn 2024 and the end of the 2025 bathing season is planned. The last component, a multifunctional sports field with a rainproof roof, will be completed in autumn 2025.
The flood situation on the new Danube plays an important role in the design. According to the requirements of the flood protection, the area was designed flood -friendly. These measures are particularly relevant because in recent years the risk of heavy rain and flood events has increased worldwide. The design of the new leisure paradise enables the storage, infiltration and derivation of water, which plays a key role in the context of the flood protection strategies.
a well thought out leisure offer
The upper levels of the new section are designed as an open parking landscape, while the lower level offers a wide water promenade with different seating options. A special feature is the openly designed "fitness landscape", which offers space for robust sports equipment up to the platforms on the waterfront. The sporting offer is also supplemented by a versatile sports field that includes grandstands for training and events. The gastronomy is baptized by an online survey with more than 9,000 participants in the name "Pier 22".
Overall, "Pier 22" not only represents a significant profit for leisure activities in Vienna, but also takes into account the increasing need for flood prevention, since the city is still ready to invest in modern infrastructure and flood protection strategies. According to experts, adapting urban planning to the challenges of climate change is essential in order to counteract future disasters as best as possible. The success rate of the project is already evident because the completed part of "Pier 22" survived the record floods in September 2024 unscathed.
