Vienna starts Optimum Tourism: A plan for sustainable growth!

Wien, Österreich - On April 8, 2025, Wientourism announced the continuation of the “Visitor Economy Strategy” (VES) entitled “Optimum Tourism”. This initiative aims to promote balanced growth between the needs of the locals and guests. A central aspect of the strategy is the optimization of tourism acceptance and guest satisfaction. According to a survey of more than 3,600 locals, 90% express a positive attitude towards tourism in the city, while 90% of the 2,500 guests surveyed are ready to recommend Vienna. Such numbers underline the potential for further growth in the city.

in 2024 Vienna recorded eight million overnight visits, which led to almost 19 million overnight stays. A third of the strategy are marked by the “desired guests”, which are defined as leisure, business and luxury travelers with high purchasing power. Another goal is that a tenth of the overnight stays comes from the meeting area. In 2023 there were already 1.6 million conference -related overnight stays, which made 9% of the overall soft.

sustainability and cooperation

An important step in the development of Visitor Economy is Vienna's membership in the "UN Tourism International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories" (Insto). This network focuses on the promotion of economical, ecological and social sustainability in tourism. In this context, Wient tourism will work closely with the city administration as well as science and research to develop the "Sustainable Destination Observatory". Indicators for measuring progress are to be defined in eleven subject areas, including tourism acceptance and climate protection.

Particular attention is paid to the governance aspects. Strictive regulations for street sales and short -term rental have already been introduced to guarantee responsible growth. Action programs are planned to enable flexibility in destination management and to meet the requirements of visitors economically.

changes in destination management

The developments in Vienna are reflected in a broader trend in tourism, which is characterized by the increasing relevance of the visitor management. This new perspective is linked to the current changes in destination management at a global and regional level. In England, for example, the changing model of destination management is examined, which takes into account new concepts of local control and complex economic factors. According to further studies, these developments call to optimally implement the advantages of the visitor management and to meet the challenges of the market.

The Visitor Economy strategy and the accompanying processes can be viewed on the official website of Wientourism at Optimum.Info . The approach of Wient tourism shows that responsible growth and local acceptance in tourism are indispensable in order to secure the city as an attractive travel destination for future generations.
