Orgasm or nasal spray: What really clears the nose?

An unexpected connection between pleasure and breathing causes excitement: Prof. Dr. Cem Bulut from the SLK Clinics in Heilbronn and his team have conducted an amusing but also fascinating study examining the influence of sex on nasal breathing. Bulut, who was awarded the world-renowned Ig Nobel Prize for his research, found that there was a visible improvement in nasal breathing after sexual activity. In an interview with the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” he reported his own experience when he noticed that his nose was clearer after sex. This discovery led to a scientific study that involved 36 couples to record nasal flow before and after intercourse. The results show that both sex and the use of a decongestant nasal spray improve nasal breathing in the short term - but with one crucial difference.

Bulut's study found that freed nasal breathing after intercourse only lasted up to three hours, while the nasal spray worked significantly longer. The comparison between the two methods was performed using a portable rhinometric device that provided precise information on nasal flow and resistance. Loud Springer The improvement in nasal breathing after an orgasm was found to last up to 60 minutes, mimicking the effect of a decongestant. Interestingly, the positive effect was only observed in participants with nasal obstruction. The combination of physical excitement and joy leads to better air circulation through the nose.

This light-hearted research illuminates the funny side of science and not only attracted attention at the Ig Nobel Prizes, but also has a message. Whether through passion or through a nasal spray, the goal is the same: to be able to breathe freely. The results of the study show once again that science can also bring joy and make you smile.
