Mega construction project threatens dark sky: ESO raises the alarm!

In the Atacama desert in Chile, a planned industrial mega project could significantly jeopardize astronomical research. The European southern star. (ESO) warns of the potential consequences of an over 3000 hectare industrial complex, which is to be built by a subsidiary of the US Energy Group AES near the renowned paranal observatory. This location has been in operation since 1999 and is one of the most important facilities for astronomical research worldwide.

The Paranal Observatory is home to the very large telescope, which has made decisive contributions to astronomy, including the first image of an exoplanet and confirmation of the accelerated expansion of the universe. This place receives special attention because it is one of the 28 large astronomical observatories that are least suffering from light pollution.

threats from the mega project

The planned construction project includes various industrial activities, including a port, ammonia and hydrogen production systems as well as thousands of electricity generators. These developments could have serious effects on the astronomical observations in the paranal observatory, in particular through light pollution and dust.

The ESO therefore calls for alternative locations for the mega project in order not to endanger the valuable astronomical location. In addition, an environmental impact assessment was requested for the project called "Inna" in order to examine the effects on the sensitive environment in detail. The warnings of the irreparable consequences for the astronomy are also supported by Heise.de
