Terrible motorcycle accident on the Großglockner: two drivers injured!

On August 11, 2025, a serious motorcycle accident occurred on the Großglockner High Alpine Road. Two motorcycles were involved: a 19-year-old German and a 60-year-old Italian, who was traveling with his wife as a passenger. The accident happened in the immediate area before bend 22, where everyone involved fell. After the fall, the 19-year-old was thrown over the right side of the road into impassable terrain and fell about 30 meters deep.

The 60-year-old and his wife fell on the right side of the road, while the Italian's passenger remained uninjured. Both motorcyclists were flown to hospitals with injuries of an unspecified degree: the 19-year-old to the BKH Lienz and the 60-year-old to the Tauernklinikum Zell am See. During the investigation, the Großglockner High Alpine Road was temporarily closed, which led to traffic delays. The incident also led to a temporary closure of the Großglockner High Alpine Road between the top of the pass and the ticket office, which lasted until around 12:15 p.m. Salzburg24 reports on these tragic circumstances.

Over the years, the Großglockner has established itself as a dangerous stretch of road for motorcyclists, which is made clear again and again by recent events and the numerous accidents in the past. These incidents shed light on the safety situation on this popular route and call for greater discussion about the necessary measures to improve safety. Also ORF Carinthia has pointed out the problem and called on road users to be careful.
