On Saturday afternoon, the fire brigades in Syke and the surrounding area were alerted when a large fire had hit a farmhouse in Ristedt. Around 2 p.m., a resident discovered heavily rising smoke from the building, which served as a residential and commercial unit. The fire brigades from several municipalities were immediately mobilized, including the weirs from Gessel-Rristt, Barrien and Melchiorshausen. Due to the massive smoke development, the operations management was quickly asked to support neighboring fire departments, such as District reported.
The extinguishing work was extremely challenging because the cause of the fire was difficult to determine, and the intense flames made an internal attack impossible. The fire brigade decided to extinguish more from the outside, an important decision, as fire brigade spokesman Stephan Nisse confirmed. Nevertheless, there was a complete ignition of the roof area, which dramatically tightened the course of the fire. Despite the massive forces, which included a total of around 200 emergency services, it could not be prevented that the roof structure and the first floor burned out completely. The damage is estimated at over one million euros, but the carpentry in the building was largely saved.
