Darkness over Vorarlberg: Massive power failures surprise citizens!
St. Anton im Montafon, Österreich - At the weekend, several power outages in Vorarlberg caused darkness and unrest. On Saturday evening, February 8, 2025, the municipalities of Schruns, Bartholomäberg, Vandans and St. Anton in the Montafon experienced a massive power failure, which lasted from 6 p.m. to 10:10 p.m. The reason: a defective transformer that not only paralyzed numerous households and shops, but also traffic lights and street lighting. According to the police report, the fire brigade and the police once had to deploy twice due to the failure, said 5min.at .
But that wasn't everything! On Sunday, February 9th, the Brandnertal was hit by another, animal blackout. A marten provided a short circuit in a transformer station at 8:30 p.m., which left about 760 households for about an hour and a half without electricity. This incident shows once again how unpredictable nature can be - even small animals can cause big problems. Here, too, the traffic lights and the street lighting were hit by the dark. As OE24.at was able to restore the power supply around 10:10 p.m. and the affected households got their light back. Both incidents in a short episode throw a worrying light on the stability of the energy infrastructure in the region.
