Shiffrin fights back: giant slalom debacle ensures tragedy!
Sestriere, Italien - Mikaela Shiffrin continues to fight with the aftermath of her severe fall, which occurred at the giant slalom in Killington (USA) at the end of November 2024. Due to her post-traumatic problems, the American ski racer had to miss the World Cup race in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, as confirmed by Instagram. Instead, she competed with Breezy Johnson in the team combination and secured a gold medal. Nevertheless, Shiffrin clearly showed in her comeback in the Italian sestriere that she has not yet fully found back to old strength. According to laola1.at she ended up in a disappointing 25th place since 2014 and missed the qualification for the final in the second round. This 31st placement caused great disappointment and was the first time since 2012 that she missed a second run in the giant slalom.
emotional challenges
Shiffrin, who usually drives in the top ten, had to cry after the race when she spoke on Swiss television. She explained: "I usually analyze what I can do to drive faster. Usually it is the top ten, top five or the podium, they are often only small adjustments. But now it looks like the adjustments that I have to make are huge." Her serious fall has strongly influenced her performance, which she gets to find out on the hard tour herself. "I'm not me right now, and that is okay," she said according to her previous Demastern in this World Cup weekend, reports Today.at .
Despite the setbacks, the 29-year-old looks optimistic about the upcoming slalom on Sunday. At the World Cup she was already able to show an excellent fifth place. It remains to be seen whether she can regain her former dominance, but the challenges currently seem overwhelming.
