Wöber after Gala: I don't want to rot in England!

Maximilian Wöber, the Austrian footballer, has endured a challenging period marked by injuries and modest playing time at Leeds United. After two knee operations and limited appearances, he returned with a strong performance. During Saturday's World Cup qualifier, Austria scored a 2-1 win against Romania, with Wöber in the starting line-up and looking to pitch himself to other clubs as Leeds plan to offload him.

“I don’t want to ‘go to waste’ in England,” explained Wöber, expressing his joy at showing the football audience that he is fit and capable. His contract with Leeds runs until 2027, but the club's management has already informed him that they are looking for a move. Team boss Ralf Rangnick chose Wöber to complement the defensively strong Philipp Lienhart, while captain David Alaba and the suspended Gernot Trauner were unavailable. Wöber was even preferred to Kevin Danso, which underlines his current achievements.

Career review and current situation

Wöber was born on February 4, 1998 in Vienna and began his football career in the youth teams of Rapid Vienna. He started his professional career with Rapid in 2015 and made his debut in a UEFA Europa League game against Valencia in 2016. After further stints at Ajax, Sevilla and FC Red Bull Salzburg, where he became the most expensive player in the Austrian Bundesliga, he moved to Leeds United on January 3, 2023. His first appearance for Leeds came in the FA Cup against Cardiff City.

The return from the loan to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2024 and his first goal for Leeds in December 2024 gave Wöber new momentum. He was first called up for the national team in September 2017 and he has since made 31 international appearances. Wöber's goal is to ignite euphoria with the team and achieve their first World Cup participation since 1998.

The relevance of sport psychology in football

Wöber's return to performance can also be seen as an indication of the importance of mental training in sport. By overcoming his injury problems and showing up in crucial moments, he could not only become interesting for other clubs, but also play a significant role in the national football system.
