Vienna threatens the half democracy: over 600,000 people without voting rights!

The upcoming Vienna election 2025 causes massive discussions: According to the current statistics of statistics Austria and reports from SOS Mismensch, 611,000 people of the age of voting in Vienna are excluded from voting-they do not have Austrian citizenship. This corresponds to around 35.6 percent of the Viennese population over 16 years. The situation in the districts of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, Brigittenau and favorites is particularly worrying, where really alarming numbers light up: around 45 percent in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and 44 percent in the other two districts.

These record numbers throw a shocking light on democracy in the city, which according to SOS is on the best way to "half democracy". Alexander Pollak, spokesman for SOS Mithensch, emphasizes that Vienna is no longer even a two-thirdt democracy and urgently demands political measures for a more inclusive society. The problem goes beyond migration: Austria's restrictive naturalization policy, which is associated with high hurdles, also contributes to the grown number of non-eligible voting. With a naturalization rate of less than 0.7 percent, Austria is one of the final lights in Europe.

forecasts and political demands

The negative developments could still be tightened according to SOS Mismensch for the forecasts: As early as 2050, more than half of the Viennese population could be without voting rights. In order to raise awareness of this critical situation, SOS Mithersch, together with partner organizations, plans a symbolic “passport no matter choice”, in which people without Austrian citizenship can also vote for the parties that run in Vienna. The social pressure on political decision -makers is growing, and the call to an inclusive democracy is getting louder.

Vienna is on the crossroads: Either the path to an open, inclusive society is taken or the city continues to go to a dilemma from which there is hardly any escape. Statistics impressively show that the course has urgently need to be covered in order not to further endanger democracy, as well as OTS Report.
