Controversial plans for a new reactor: Temelín in focus of criticism!
At the location of the Temelín nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic, a new small modular reactor (SMR) is to be built, which is the first project of its kind in Europe. According to reports from Global 2000 , the environmental impact assessment (RRP) is accompanied for the project of critical votes. Patricia Lorenz von Global 2000 asks the Czech Ministry of the Environment to stop the procedure as long as no concrete SMR design is presented. It is criticized that information about the number of reactors, performance and safety requirements are missing.
The Czech energy group ČEZ sees the construction of the SMR as an important step to ensure energy supply and has already signed an agreement to found the southern Bohemian energy park. ČEZ director Daniel Beneš has announced that the SMR should be built by 2032 to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. As part of this project, a training center for specialists is also set up, which is seen as a unique opportunity to promote specialist knowledge in nuclear energy, such as reported.
criticism and ambiguities
The Czech government argues that atomic energy is necessary to protect energy independence, especially in the context of increasing energy prices and ecological challenges in Europe. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the upcoming challenges regarding the SMR project can be mastered in good time or whether more clarity and security is required before construction work is initiated.
