Croatian football has lost one of its former stars. Nikola Pokrivac, a 15-fold international, died on Friday in a tragic car accident at the age of 39. The incident occurred in the city of Karlovac after Pokrivac rose into the car with three teammates after training. The group was involved in a violent traffic accident in which several cars were involved. In this accident, not only Pokrivac was fatally injured, but his passengers also suffered serious injuries. Another person was also tragically killed.
Marijan Kustic, the President of the Croatian Football Association, commented on this shocking incident on social media and described the loss of Pokrivac as "sad". He praised him as a great football player, who lived passionately for sport until his last moment and, despite his health problems, showed great courage.
Career and successes
Pokrivac began his professional career at AS Monaco, from which he switched to Red Bull Salzburg for two million euros in 2009. During his time in Austria, which lasted until 2011, he played 46 games and was able to win a championship title. In 2011, his contract was resolved in Salzburg and switched to Dinamo Zagreb. Due to health complications, Pokrivac had to end his committed professional career in 2015, but remained active in the fourth Croatian league until his tragic death.
Over the years, Pokrivac also enjoyed international missions, including a remarkable appearance in the Europa League in 2013 with HNK Rijeka against VfB Stuttgart. His national team career was limited to 15 games, but his influence and dedication to football will remain unforgettable in Croatia.
