Women strengthen peace: Vatican calls for equal participation

In a pioneering appeal, the Holy Stuhl at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna has called for a greater involvement of women in peace processes. The Vatica Diplomat Richard Gyhra emphasized that women are essential to analyze the causes of conflict and to develop new solutions. "Women who are created equally with men in dignity and right bring new and more effective approaches to conflict resolution with their individual perspective," said Gyhra, according to the reporting of Kathpress . The Vatican supports the OSCE obligations for the greater participation of women in peace safety measures such as conflict prevention and crisis management, and at the same time demands increased protection for women in conflict areas, since these are often victims of violence.

In addition to these demands, alliance for women, peace and security emphasizes that UN-Resolution 1325 is a decisive step in linking gender issues with security and peace policy. This resolution obliges all UN Member States to include women at all levels of conflict management and reconstruction. Switzerland has passed several national action plans (NAP 1325) since 2007 and plans to introduce the fifth NAP to the voice of civil society in the agenda for women, peace and security, as reported by Frieda . The project aims to increase the visibility and relevance of the WPS agenda in the administration and the public and to focus on human-centered, feminist security principles.

Important measures for gender justice

Allianz published a report in May 2024 that defines civil society priorities for the 5th Swiss National Action Plan. The recommendations developed include initiatives to depart traditional safety -focused approaches to a more comprehensive understanding of peace and security. The importance of the care work for the security of everyone was emphasized, which is also considered a hurdle for the participation of women.
