Chihuahua becomes a hero: rescued after falling into a crevasse!

On July 6, 2025, a dramatic incident occurred on the Fee Glacier above Saas-Fee in Switzerland. A hiker fell about eight meters into a crevasse after breaking through a snow bridge. Luckily, his loyal companion, a small Chihuahua, was at his side and proved indispensable to the rescue.

The victim had an amateur walkie-talkie with him that he could use to make an emergency call. However, locating the exact location of the accident site initially proved difficult. But the Chihuahua's unusual behavior drew the emergency services' attention to the scene of the accident, which was ultimately crucial to saving the man.

Rescue by Air Zermatt

The Air Zermatt crew took off at 3:00 p.m. with three rescue specialists to rescue the man. Due to the extensive glacier surface, the search for the site of the collapse was challenging. The rescue team received unexpected support when a specialist spotted movement on a stone: the Chihuahua. His behavior helped to locate the exact scene of the accident and led to rescuers being able to rappel down and successfully rescue the man.

After the rescue, both the man and his dog were flown to the hospital in Visp. The rescue specialists rated the Chihuahua's behavior as crucial to the success of the operation. The dog had closely followed the specialists' movements throughout the operation and the communication between humans and animals once again underlined the close bond that exists between humans and their pets.

Alpine accidents in context

This incident is not the only one this year, as the Alps region is often affected by serious accidents. On the same day there was another serious accident in the Wilder Kaiser, where a rope team had to be rescued after difficulties with the abseiling slope. Tragically, a 24-year-old mountaineer also fell on the Watzespitze and lost his life. In the past few weeks, numerous rescue operations have been necessary due to accidents in the mountains, which once again illustrates the risks that lurk in the Alpine area, as alpin.de reports.

However, the rescue on the Fee Glacier also shows how important the quick response and support from rescue teams is, as well as the role that our animal companions can play. In this case, the Chihuahua not only accompanied his master, but also proved to be a lifesaver.
