Zelenskyy's change of course: Peace without returning all areas?
A dramatic turning point in the Ukraine conflict: President Wolodymyr Selenskyj surprisingly stated that the war with Russia could possibly end without the reconquest of all occupied areas! In an interview with Sky News at the weekend, Selenskyj revealed that he is aiming for a quick termination of the "hot phase" of the war, provided that NATO grants security guarantees for the areas controlled by Kiev.
Selenskyj, who had previously emphasized that peace was only possible with the return of all Ukrainian territories, has now changed its position. "We have to do this quickly," he said, adding that the return of the areas occupied by Russia could later be negotiated diplomatically. This remarkable U -turn could significantly change the dynamics in the conflict and shows the urgent need to reduce military tensions.
The pressure grows
Reality on the battlefield is hard: Selenskyj admitted that the Ukrainian armed forces are unable to recapture the areas occupied by Russia. "Our army doesn't have the strength," he confessed. This statement comes at a critical time, since US politics under the newly elected Republican leader Donald Trump could possibly take a different direction. Trump could reduce military support for Ukraine, which would further tighten the situation of the Ukrainian armed forces.
public opinions in Ukraine also seem to change. A Gallup survey shows that 52 percent of Ukrainians want a rapid termination of the war, even if this means to give up area claims. This development could further influence Selenskyj's new strategy, while he is at the same time urging NATO membership to secure the remaining areas.
