Zelenskyy calls for US help: Europe alone is not enough for peace!

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged that the United States and Europe work together on a peace plan for Ukraine. Amid the ongoing war with Russia, Zelenskyy emphasizes that his country's security cannot be guaranteed without US support.

At a summit of EU leaders in Brussels, Zelenskyy welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron's proposals to send troops to Ukraine following a possible ceasefire. “It is crucial that Europe makes a significant contribution to security guarantees,” he said. He called on European partners to take part in this initiative to end the war.

The role of the USA is indispensable

But Zelenskyy left no doubt that European guarantees alone are not enough. “I believe that European guarantees for Ukraine will not be sufficient,” he said after the talks. The statement comes at a critical time as President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House next month and has vowed to quickly end the conflict.

There are great concerns in Kyiv and among its European allies. They fear that Trump, seen as unpredictable, could reduce military support to Ukraine, which would pressure Zelenskyy to make painful concessions to Moscow. EU partners are committed to increasing support to put Kiev in a strong negotiating position.

No more Russian gas

In another explosive statement, Zelenskyy made it clear that Ukraine would no longer consider Russian gas transit. "We will not extend the transit of Russian gas. We will not allow additional billions to be earned on the blood of our citizens," he said in a press conference. The existing contract governing gas transportation through Ukraine expires at the end of the year, and Ukraine has already made it clear that it does not seek an extension.

The European Commission has signaled that it is ready to let the contract expire because all countries that receive Russian gas through Ukraine have access to alternative supplies. Zelenskyy criticized Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who had warned of the economic consequences of a gas ban. “It's a little shameful to talk about money during a war because we're losing people,” Zelenskyy said.

He added that Ukraine is ready to transport another country's gas to Europe through its infrastructure, but only on the condition that it is not relabeled Russian gas. “We have to make sure that we only transit gas if it does not come from Russia,” he explained.
