The USA distance themselves from Europe: threaten military self -confidence?
In a surprising turn, the US government said that it was no longer willing to guarantee European security. At a meeting of the Ukraine contact group in Brussels, US defense minister Pete Hegseth made it clear that the European NATO countries must be responsible for their own defense in the future. Hegseth emphasized that the United States wanted to focus its resources on other global challenges, while the financial and military support for Ukraine is supposed to come from the European countries. These announcements have been interpreted in such a way that NATO articles 5, which promises solidarity in the event of an attack, could lose importance what Russian propagandists see in the withdrawal of Western support, said OE24.
The situation could be alarming for Ukraine and its European allies. With the concrete rejection of NATO membership of Ukraine by the United States, which Hegseth described as "unrealistic", Ukraine is becoming increasingly uncertain. The renewed attacks of Russian troops tighten this situation. Hegseth also asked the European countries to invest in their defense and formulate clear security guarantees if a peace process occurs. However, he excluded NATO intervention, which fürs further fears that Russia could proceed without significant resistance to European countries, as reported by ZDF.
Hegseth also warned that NATO partners have to communicate openly through military threats and necessities. "Two percent are not enough," he warned, since the eastern NATO countries have to adapt to Russia's incessant aggression. Against this background, the question arises as to how the European countries will react to these new challenges, while the military situation in Ukraine remains tense and the possibility of a US withdrawal from the security guarantee is becoming more and more likely.
