Ostsee under observation: Estonia protects important power cables from sabotage!

After a serious disruption of the submarine cable in the Baltic Sea, Estonia immediately took measures to protect the national energy infrastructure. Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur announced that the Estonian Navy began to drive patrols to guard Estlink 1 undersee cable. This decision is made in the course of suspicion of sabotage, after the Kabel Estlink 2 was suddenly separated from the network on December 25, which endangers the collaboration with Finland.

Use of the Navy against possible sabotage

The Finnish authorities have already initiated investigations against the oil tanker "Eagle S" driving under the flag of the cook islands, which may be responsible for the damage to the cable. According to the Finnish customs, the ship could belong to the so -called Russian shadow fleet - a network of ships used by Russia to avoid sanctions. Finland's President Alexander Stubb assured that the situation was "under control" and emphasized the importance of joint efforts to secure the critical infrastructure.

The urgency of these measures becomes clear, since during the Christmas season there were also disorders of other communication cables in the Baltic Sea. These incidents require increased vigilance in Estonia, Finland and other residents of the Baltic Sea. Despite the challenges, the Estonian and Finnish authorities assured that larger effects on consumers are not to be expected, while the repair of the affected Estlink 2 cable could take several months, as from the reports of OE24 and Barron’s emerges.
