Kharkiv experiences the strongest attack in the war, reports the mayor
In the early morning hours of Saturday, Russia bombed the second largest city in Ukraine, Charkiw, with massive attacks, as the mayor announced. This happened only one night after Moscow had carried out one of the largest air offensives on Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
extensive attacks on Ukraine
In the past few days,Russia has carried out comprehensive attacks on Ukraine, which are seen as retaliation measures for a daring drone use of Kiev, which has invalidated more than a third of Moscow's strategic cruise missile. These attacks focus in particular on the northeast region, where Charkiw is about 30 kilometers from the Russian border.
number of victims in Kharkiw
Charkiw was shaken on Saturday by "at least 40 explosions", which resulted in at least two fatalities and more than a dozen injured, Mayor Igor Terekhov reported in a telegram contribution. "Charkiw is currently experiencing the strongest attack since the beginning of the comprehensive war," said Terekhov. “The enemy also strikes with rockets, drones and directed bombs. This is pure terror against the peaceful charkiw.”
scenes of destruction
Videos published by the emergency services showed a big fire in a multi -storey apartment block in the Osnovyanskyi district in the southwest of the city, where Terekhov reported that two people were killed. In the northern district of Kyivskyi, too, a person died in an attack when a house was hit.
reactions to the attacks
The day before, Russia had apparently reacted to the drone surgery of Ukraine and fired a series of drones and ballistic rockets over large parts of Ukraine. These attacks demanded at least six lives and injured dozens of others. US President Donald Trump told reporters on board Air Force One that "she gave Putin a reason to go into her and have her bombed them last night".
diplomatic efforts and possible sanctions
Trump had previously warned that Russian retaliation was imminent after talking to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday. It was initially unclear whether Putin plans to continue to escalate retaliation. Trump has spoken out for a end of the Three Years' War, but hesitates to impose new sanctions against Russia, while the United States puts pressure on the parties to the conflict to achieve an armistice agreement. On Friday he said he would "use further sanctions against Russia" if necessary.
peace talks in Istanbul
Official representatives of Russia and Ukraine met on Monday in Istanbul for a second round of peace talks, which, however, lasted Barely for over an hour. The only tangible result was an agreement to prepare another prisoner exchange.
