Speeders on the A2: Police catch BMW at 243 km/h!
On May 18, 2025, a 20-year-old BMW driver was stopped on the A2 for extremely speeding. He was initially clocked at 210 km/h, but the situation escalated when he increased the speed to a remarkable 243 km/h. Only a maximum speed of 130 km/h is permitted on this section of the motorway. The police then temporarily confiscated the BMW and revoked the driver's probationary license, while he was also reported for his behavior. This reports Cosmo.
In another check in Vienna, a 24-year-old Audi driver was stopped just before midnight. There was no end to this frenzy either, as it was measured at 162 km/h at a permitted speed of just 70 km/h. Both drivers were remorseful and admitted their transgressions. The Vienna police have made it clear that they are taking a strict line against speeders who endanger the lives of other road users.
Rising numbers and increased controls
In the first quarter of 2025, 18 vehicles were confiscated in Vienna due to serious speeding. This represents an alarming increase of 40 percent compared to the previous year. The police are also observing a similar trend in other federal states and are therefore planning increased speed controls, especially on the A2. They are focusing on the Wiener Neudorf area, where a reduced speed limit of 80 km/h applies. In addition, this section is monitored by section control systems to ensure compliance with speed limits. Further information on road safety and accidents in Europe is provided by the European Commission.
The repeated incidents can be explained by the increasing danger on Austrian roads. While road safety is often discussed in society, a comprehensive solution is necessary to significantly reduce the number of accidents. The police are taking preventive measures and appealing to all road users to take the applicable speed limits seriously.
