Protests in Georgia: President calls for the revolution against voting fraud!
In a dramatic political turmoil in Georgia, the European Union has called for an investigation of the alleged counterfeits in the controversial parliamentary elections. The ruling party Georgian Dream, which received over 54 percent of the vote, is not recognized by the pro-Western President Salome Zourabichvili. She described the election as a "total fake" and called on the citizens to massive protests to fight against the supposed injustice.
The opposition, led by the United National Movement (UNM), claims that the elections were stolen and fears that the ruling party could bring the country closer to Russia. Zourabichvili explained that the choice was influenced by a "Russian special surgery", which further heated up the tensions in the region. Former President Mikheil Saakashvili, who sits in prison, joined the call to protests and emphasized that "nobody should enter the parliament".
International reactions and allegations
The international observers expressed concern about the choice, which was characterized by "uneven conditions, pressure and tensions". The EU Council President Charles Michel called for a "quick, transparent and independent examination" of the allegations. In the meantime, the incumbent prime minister Irakli Kobakhidze decisively rejected the allegations of election manipulation and described the victory of his party as "impressive". He accused the opposition to undermine the constitutional order of the country.
The elections could be crucial for Georgia's efforts to join the EU. The EU has already warned that the election results could influence Tbilisis on membership in the 27-member block. While the tensions increase and the political fronts harden, the situation in Georgia is increasingly tense, with the possibility that the country's EU dreams are in danger.
