Austrians love their coffee: 2.75 cups daily on average!

In Austria, coffee is not just a drink, but an integral part of culture and everyday life. According to a recent survey, the population consumes an average of 2.75 cups of coffee per person per day. Over 74.8% of Austrians enjoy this pleasure at least once a day. Coffee consumption is particularly high in western federal states such as Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Salzburg, where an average of 2.98 cups are drunk every day. This is based on the data from 5min out.

In comparison, daily coffee consumption in Vienna is 2.58 cups. Interestingly, only 69% of the population here drinks coffee every day. Older generations, especially those over 70, prefer to consume at home or in a coffee house, while younger age groups under 30, such as those aged 15-29, are particularly interested in “coffee to go”.

Age groups and consumer behavior

The survey also shows significant differences in coffee consumption by age group. Those aged 50 to 59 consume an average of 3.24 cups daily, while those aged 15 to 29 only drink 2.16 cups. Another notable trend is the increase in the preparation of classic filter coffee among the younger age group, which has increased by 10%. Around 11% of coffee drinkers now use plant-based milk alternatives.

As the Tchibo coffee report shows, coffee is often perceived as a pleasure and part of the morning ritual. When asked about the most popular types of coffee, extended coffee, espresso and coffee with milk (melange) are at the top. 78.2% of those surveyed rely on shopping in the supermarket. In terms of willingness to pay, 22.8% of consumers do not want to spend more than €12.99 per kilogram of coffee, while 15.8% are willing to invest up to €20.00.

Variety of preparation and enjoyment orientation

Austria has established itself as one of the leading countries in Europe, with coffee consumption of 7.2 kilos per capita per year. Overall, this corresponds to a per capita consumption of around 162 liters per year. The enjoyment of coffee as a quality product is important to Austrians. Current trends show a growing demand for cold brew creations and more sustainable product alternatives.

The preparation options are diverse and range from espresso to latte macchiato to various cold brew variants. Fully automatic and electric espresso machines now make up 46% of the coffee machine market. This supports a growing popularity of coffee making in households, with the proportion of households with capsule machines increasing from 11.7% in 2009 to 44% in 2019, according to Austrian Coffee Association reported.

In summary, coffee in Austria is inextricably linked to people's lifestyle. The finding that over 60% of consumers make no compromises when purchasing coffee shows the deep-rooted appreciation for this iconic drink.
