Frontal collision on B179: Large deployment in Breitenwang!
On April 18, 2025, around 12:50 p.m. on the B179 federal road in the municipal area of Breitenwang there was a serious traffic accident. This frontal collision included two cars that were directed by German citizens. The drivers were 52 and 55 years old. The incident led to a total of four injuries, including three men aged 52, 23 and 12 years old and a 23-year-old woman. All injuries independently have medical help, whereby the exact degrees of injury are still indefinite.
The accident caused considerable damage to property on both vehicles. The B179 had to be closed to all traffic for about 1.5 hours, which led to significant traffic disabilities in the area. As reported [5min.at] (https://www.5min.at/5202504181752/im-urlaub-frontalgunstosses- Fuer-Fuer-Gross-and-Sperre/), the emergency deployment was comprehensive and required the mobilization of several emergency services.
traffic accidents in Europe
Today's incident is part of the worrying statistics on traffic accidents in Europe. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives in traffic accidents or are seriously injured. Between 2010 and 2020, however, a decline in the number of road traffic fats was recorded by 36 percent. In 2019, 22,800 traffic fatalities were counted, while in 2020 this number fell by 4,000
Overall, preliminary figures show that the number of fatalities is at a record low in 18 EU member states. Interestingly, the pandeme -related decline in traffic has also had an impact on the number of accidents, which, however, are difficult to quantify. According to [europarl.eu] (https://www.europarl.eu/topics/de/article/20190410sto36615/ Verkehrsstatistiken-in-der-eu-Infographik) Sweden had the safest roads, with only 18 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, while Romania with 85 traffic dead per 1 million inhabitants the highest rate reported.
demographic aspects of traffic accidents
The age groups that are most affected by traffic accidents show interesting patterns. In 2018, 12 percent of the traffic fatalities between 18 and 24 years old, although this age group is only 8 percent of the population. The number of traffic fatalities in this group has decreased by 43 percent since 2010. In contrast, 28 percent of the road fatalities were over 65 years old, which represents an increase compared to 22 percent in 2010. The proportion of children under the age of 15 in 2018 was also only 2 percent.
An important demographic feature is that 76 percent of the traffic fatalities are men, a pattern that remains relatively constant in all Member States. The current situation and the ongoing discussions about traffic safety illustrate the urgency to take measures to reduce accidents and their consequences, especially with regard to the younger and older road users.
