Forest fire in the south of France: older woman dies, 11,000 hectares burned

A rapid angry forest fire in southern France has already burned down over 11,000 hectares in 15 municipalities and demanded that a person live, as local officials announced on Wednesday.

"We mourn the death of an older woman in Saint-Laurent-de-La-Cabrerisse, which was apparently not ready to leave her home," Rémy Recio, a regional official, told the CNN broadcaster BfMTV.

The fire broke out near Ribauen in the Aude Department on Tuesday afternoon and also injured two civilians and seven firefighters, added Recio.

About 1,500 firefighters fought against the flames all night, while 320 reinforcements arrived on Wednesday. The air extinguishers were also resumed on Wednesday morning. Four canadair water bombs, a heavy helicopter that is able to transport four tons of water, as well as four DASH aircraft to support the Boden Crews.

"The provisional damage balance shows that about thirty vehicles have burned out and 25 houses were affected by the flames. Currently there are 2,500 households without electricity," said the Aude Prefecture in a press release on Wednesday. "The fire remains very active, and the weather conditions will remain unfavorable on August 6th."
