Over 50,000 migrants have been in office since Starrmer's taking office: pressure on London is increasing!

Since Sir Keir Starmer took office as Prime Minister of Great Britain on July 5, 2024, migration over the English Channel has increased significantly. According to Exxpress.at, 50,271 migrants have already entered this country, while over 27,000 people crossed the dangerous passage this year alone. This increase has set strangers under domestic political pressure, especially since the competition is increasingly evident by the UK reform party.

In order to curb uncontrolled migration, London and Paris have closed a new agreement. This, as [nau.ch] (https://www.nau.ch/europa/migration-uber-armelkanal-parton-london-schliessen-gieben- 6638193), is aimed at reducing the number of illegal crossings and will be in force by June 2026. As part of the agreement, migrants whose asylum applications are classified as inadmissible are sent back to France. These people can be detained before they are returned.

Details of the new agreement

As part of the agreement, which was signed by the interior ministers of both countries, Gérald Darmanin from France and Suella Braverman from Great Britain, British officials are now also said to be an observer in France, while conversely, French officials are sent to Great Britain. This unusual measure aims to strengthen the cooperation between the two countries and increase the police presence on the northern France coast by 40 percent.

In addition, new surveillance technology will be used to control the crossings more efficiently. This year alone, over 40,000 migrants have already entered the UK, which is more than in the entire year 2021. The British government has paid 72.2 million euros to France for increased border protection, with the focus of the migration from Albania in particular, since almost a third of the migrants entered came from this country.

Challenges and criticism

In the past, dealing with migration has often been a dispute between Great Britain and France, such as Tagesschau.de. An exchange system is planned, in which each migrant backed up is replaced by another migrant from a third country, but the exact details of this system remain open. Experts express concerns about the chances of success of these measures.

In the first six months of 2025, around 20,000 refugees came across the English Channel, and despite harassment who experience refugees, the flight remains a risky but urgent option. According to reports, around 50 migrants are to be returned per week. Critics complain that the British government has not made a satisfactory regulations for the more secure entry of refugees.

In view of this situation, Rishan, a refugee from Eritrea, demands the creation of safe escape routes. In a year in which 82 people try to cross the English Canal, the challenges on both sides of the border are enormous. Rishan also describes the difficulties that refugees experience in the recording country, where they are often perceived as the cause of social problems.
