Drama on the Aspangbahn: Car crash in railcars - driver injured!
On Tuesday afternoon there was a serious accident on the Aspangbahn in Günselsdorf, Baden district, when a car collided with a railcar. According to a spokesman for ÖBB, Christopher Seif, there were no injuries on the train, while the driver probably suffered heavy injuries. The accident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. when a car driver apparently overlooked an approaching train.
Due to the collision, the railcars derailed with all four axes. The fire brigade was on site and helped out the train when the passengers were evacuated. A rail replacement traffic has been set up for the other passengers, since the Aspangbahn between the Felixdorf and Traiskirchen train stations remains closed until Tuesday. The travelers had to expect an additional travel time of up to 60 minutes.
Consequences of the accident
According to reports, there are two injuries in this incident, but no further details were published for the exact circumstances of the course of the accident.
Statistics on rail accidents in Europe shows that such incidents are not uncommon. Between 2021 and 2023, Eurostat registered a significant number of deaths from rail accidents in different countries. An overview of the data is available on Statista.
Accidents like this illustrate the risks that exist both in rail and road traffic. While the passengers on the train got away without injuries, the incident also shows the potential dangers for drivers in dealing with level crossings.
At the moment it remains to be seen which measures may be taken to further increase the safety on the railways and to avoid such incidents in the future. The auxiliary train was requested for the removal of the derailed railcar and could help to clean up the situation as soon as possible.
Further information on this incident will soon be available in the news, as the investigation and clean -up work will continue.
