Spain on a title course: Hermoso eludes European Championship dreams!

The Spanish national women's football team looks full of expectations for the upcoming European Championship, which begins against Portugal on Thursday. After their triumph at the World Cup in 2023, the players are now striving to conquer the continental crown. The team has developed strongly in recent years and would like to support their ambitions with a victory against Portugal to move into an EM final for the first time. The squad of Spain is considered to be high quality and includes stars such as Alexia Putellas, Irene Paredes and the current world footballer Aitana Bonmatí, which is, however, questionable due to health problems. She had recently become infected with viral meningitis and came back to the team hotel late.

A central topic in the run -up to the tournament is the unmounted nomination of Jennifer Hermoso, Spain's record goalkeeper with 57 goals in 123 games. The trainer Montserrat Tomé announced the list of squad at the beginning of June and was aware of the controversy that surrounded the Hermosos. Hermoso, which, after an incident during the 2023 World Cup, in which Luis Rubiales kissed it, became a symbolic figure in the fight against sexism in sport, expressed her criticism openly on the platform X and asked Tomé to concentrate on the European Championship, as the players could do this alone. Hermoso is currently running for the Club Tigres in Mexico and recently strongly questioned Tomé's explanations with reference to their own performance.

sexism and controversy in women's football

The incident about Luis Rubiales, who was convicted of sexual aggression and is blocked by FIFA for three years, caused a sensation internationally and is perceived as a symbol of sexism in sport. In the middle of these controversies, Tomé emphasizes that the decision not to nominate Hermoso has sporting reasons based on their current performance. Nevertheless, she understands the difficult situation in which Hermoso is located, and demands more openness and understanding of the official.

Hermosos situation is not the only one who points to the challenges of women in football. Sexism in football remains an urgent topic that affects numerous players. Almuth Schult, a former goalkeeper of the German national team, reported sexist prejudices, whom she was facing her career. The players Tabea Kemme and Franziska Bielfeld also experience everyday sexist comments that aim at their performance in sports. These reports illustrate how urgently an equality is in the football area and how important projects are based on equality and equal opportunities in women's football.

The challenge of the European Championship

With regard to the European Championship, Spain has already gained positive experiences against Portugal in the Nations League. In April, the Spanish eleven won an impressive 7-1 win. In addition to Portugal, Spanish internationals will also have to expect duel against Belgium and Italy. The hopes rest on a strong degree in the tournament, which is supposed to reflect the rapidly developing women's football scene in Spain. The team was recently received by Queen Letizia in the Zarzuela Palace, which underlines the growing importance of women's football in the country.

The upcoming games will not only test the team's skills, but also the public perception of women's football and the integrating challenges with which the players are confronted. The European Championship 2025 in Switzerland could become a turning point in the history of women's football in Spain.
