Major fire destroys Tomorrowland main stage before festival starts
A massive fire has destroyed the main stage of the world-famous Tomorrowland festival in Belgium, just days before it was scheduled to open on Friday.
Severe damage to the main stage
Festival organizers announced in a statement Wednesday evening: "Due to a serious incident and fire at the Tomorrowland Main Stage, our beloved Main Stage has suffered significant damage." They also confirmed that no one was injured during the incident.
Spectacular scenes on the festival grounds
Videos showed thick black smoke billowing over the festival grounds in Boom, Belgium, on Wednesday. Fireworks could also be seen and heard in the distance. According to Belgian public broadcaster VRT, the festival's main stage was almost completely burned down. The emergency services are on site, but the fire is not yet under control.
Evacuation of employees
There were no festival-goers on site at the time of the fire, although around 1,000 employees were present and have since been evacuated, VRT reported. The electronic dance music festival was scheduled to begin on Friday.
Optimism from the organizers
In their statement, organizers emphasized that the “DreamVille” campsite will open as planned on Thursday and that they are focused on finding solutions for the festival weekend.
Call for caution
Local police confirmed the fire in a post on X and urged people to stay away from the smoke and clear the way for emergency services. It is still unclear how the fire started, VRT reported.
In addition to this information, CNN's Majlie de Puy Kamp contributed to this report.
