Peace initiative for Ukraine: Meinl-Reisinger pushes for a ceasefire!

Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS) has launched an important initiative that focuses on a peace solution to the Ukraine conflict. The aim is to achieve a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine within the framework of the EU. In this project, which oe24 describes in detail, the focus is on increasing the pressure on Russia and getting it to return to the negotiating table. According to Meinl-Reisinger, Ukraine is ready for negotiations and it is now up to Russia to silence the weapons.

The initiative receives support from 15 EU states, including countries such as Germany, Belgium and Spain. A corresponding letter will be sent to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on Monday, while the initiative will be discussed at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Tuesday. Despite these diplomatic efforts, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin has so far shown little concession to US peace efforts. Russia has vehemently rejected calls for a ceasefire and a minimum of 30 days of calm, without showing any signs of willingness to stop the war of aggression against Ukraine.

Putin's proposal and the reactions

daily news Istanbul would be a possible location for these talks, which could take place from May 15, 2025. Putin has stressed that "those who really want peace cannot be against it." At the same time, he accuses Ukraine of being responsible for the failure of the talks in 2022. His demands include that Ukraine remain neutral and accept the occupation of territories, including Crimea.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyj sees Putin's offer as a positive signal, but first calls for a ceasefire. French President Macron describes Putin's proposal as a "first move" but recognizes a number of shortcomings. The three-day ceasefire ordered by Putin has now expired and there have been renewed Russian drone attacks on several cities in Ukraine, with the Ukrainian Air Force intercepting 60 of 108 Russian combat drones.

Conflict and international positions

The war in Ukraine remains a central issue on the international stage. Tagesschau reports that Russia and the USA are holding talks about ending the war in Ukraine. While Ukraine strives to regain the territories occupied by Russia and wants a security policy connection with the West, Russia remains insistent on keeping the annexed territories and shows little willingness to make concessions.

The EU is trying to have a say in the peace solution, but rejects Trump's proposal to leave the military safeguarding of the ceasefire to the Europeans. In terms of geopolitical tensions, international relations are complicated by the different demands and requirements of the parties involved. The negotiations and talks are crucial to finding a path to lasting peace as civilians continue to suffer from the conflict.
