Duisburg mourns: popular cafés finally close their doors!
In Duisburg, a sad farewell announces: Two popular cafes that have become popular meeting points in the city for years finally close their doors. The "crumbs", known for its vegan specialties, will open for the last time on December 22, 2024, as the "WAZ" reports. The operator of Martin Reekers has long been fighting with serious health problems, including burnout symptoms, who forced him to make the decision. The cozy café, which offered a feel-good atmosphere with old armchairs and tables, was not only a starting point for Duisburger, but also for guests from Cologne and Belgium.
At the same time, the popular "Café Evergreen" in Wallstrasse also closes. Owner Sebastian, who successfully led the café for over five years, also decided due to illness that he can no longer continue. In an emotional farewell post on Instagram and Facebook, he thanked his loyal guests and team members and spoke of the difficult decision that his heart broke. "With you, Duisburg loses so much," he expressed the pain of the farewell, which has already triggered numerous sad reactions with his followers, as can be seen on social media.
The sad reasons for the closures
Both cafes were not only gastronomic facilities, but were of particular importance for the community. The "crumbs" was a haven for vegan delights and the "crumbly kitchen" an Institution for coffee lovers. The closings are a symptomatic sign of the challenges with which the gastronomy in the region is confronted. The pressure on the self-employed in the industry is growing, especially since the difficult years of corona pandemic. Due to health burdens and business challenges, both operators have no longer seen their way to continue their traditional restaurants. In Duisburg, this means another painful loss for the culinary diversity of the city, which suffers a real loss with these closings.
