15 years in prison for human retailers: Court strikes hard!
In a dramatic judgment, a French court condemned 18 members of a notorious human smuggling network who is responsible for the dangerous crossing of migrants via the English Channel. The judgments were announced in Lille in northern French, where the accused were punished for their role in a criminal company that operated between 2020 and 2022 and risked numerous lives. The main accused, the 26-year-old Iraqi Mirkhan Rasoul, received the longest prison sentence of 15 years after led from his prison cell in France. The other 17 accused, including a woman, received penalties between two and ten years. The public prosecutor described the accused as "dealers of death" who had loaded boats up to 15 times of their capacity. Many accused were not present during the process; Some followed the negotiation from various prisons in northern France, while others are on the run. Arrest warrants were issued for nine of the convicts.
a network of the profit
The investigation showed that this network made enormous profits through the crossings from France to Great Britain, with each crossing brought up to 100,000 euros. The British National Crime Agency (NCA) reported that the crossings this year were particularly fatal, with at least 56 deaths. This has been going on in 2024 for the deadliest year since the beginning of the crossings in 2018. This year, over 31,000 people have already dared to take the dangerous way across the channel.
The cooperation between British and French authorities is reinforced to smash human smuggling networks. British Prime Minister Keir Strander has promised to "smash" the gangs behind this trade and explain that people smuggling should be put on a level with global "terrorism". The NCA described the convicted network as one of the most productive they have ever seen.
