Two years after the train accident of Tempi: commemoration in Vienna and protests worldwide!

Tempi, Griechenland - Vienna/Athens, February 27, 2025 (Cape)-On the occasion of the second anniversary of the tragic train accident of Tempi, the Greek Orthodox Metropolis from Austria invites you to a memorial service on Friday, February 28, at 1 p.m. in the Trinity Cathedral in Vienna. The service is kept under the motto that one should pray for the souls of the 57 deceased victims and demand justice. The accident happened on February 28, 2023, when an Intercity train in Middle Greece collided with a freight train, which shocked and demanded numerous injuries.

Regardless of the past two years, the exact cause of the accident remains unclear what triggered protests nationwide. With a general strike and demonstrations, citizens are calling for a comprehensive information on the anniversary. This situation is also publicly addressed by Maria Karystianou, who lost her 20-year-old daughter in the accident. She is passionate about the Enlightenment and says: "The crime of Tempi includes everything. Greed, degradation of human dignity and abuse of power." Their urgent reminder calls for a government responsibility, while the accident has not yet been fully clarified, as made clear in a hearing before the parliamentary committee of inquiry.

scandal about media silence and government

In addition, the EU member states also penetrate a critical examination of the rule of law in Greece in a recent report, since worrying reports on the situation of freedom of the press and the handling of the government with critical media became loud. A large part of the EU parliamentarians sees "very serious threats to democracy [...] and fundamental rights" in Greece, so reported journal21.ch . The separation of powers is questioned, and it is feared that the government manipulates public opinion by monitoring and control of the media, while the clarification of the train accident falls by the wayside.

The investigation remains inhibited by political intrigue and suspicion of corruption, which reinforces the despair of the victims' families. Despite these severe allegations in the international comparison of democracies, the government sees itself better evaluated than for years before and tries to distract from the continuing defects, as the economist reported.
