Fatal impact in Tulln: 82-year-old drives against concrete wall!
Tulln, Österreich - In a tragic turn, a traffic accident ended in an underground car park in Tulln. An 82-year-old driver from the Tulln district drove his vehicle into the garage around 11.15 a.m. when he got massive gas for reasons that were unexplained so far. The car bounced down against a concrete wall.

The driver and the 51-year-old daughter of the couple, who was on the back seat, suffered injuries indefinitely and had to be brought to the University Hospital Tulln. The exact course of the accident so far remains unclear.
Current accident statistics
The incident in Tulln contributes to the concern for traffic accidents in Austria. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, a total of 73 traffic fatalities were registered from January 1 to April 6, 2025, which means an increase compared to the 62 deaths in the previous year. In 2023 there were still 77 traffic fatalities.
In the past week alone, seven people died in six different traffic accidents, including five passengers in a car and three pedestrians. The most common causes of these fatal accidents were carelessness and priority violations. A serious accident attracted special attention on April 1, 2025 in the Neunkirchen district, in which four Ukrainian passengers died after their minibus collided with a saddle train.
traffic accidents in Europe
The problem of traffic accidents is not only limited to Austria, but also affects all of Europe. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of traffic fatalities in the EU fell by 36 percent. 22,800 people died in 2019, in 2020 there were 4,000 fewer. Current statistics show that 18 EU member states can record a decline in deaths on a record low.
Although the Covid 19 pandemic led to a decline in traffic at short notice, the precise effect on the number of accidents is difficult to measure. In the EU, the average rate is 42 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, while in Sweden the streets are considered the safest way, with only 18 deaths per 1 million inhabitants. In contrast, Romania reported the highest rate with 85 deaths per 1 million inhabitants in 2020.
The recent events in Tulln clarify that despite all efforts to ensure traffic safety, every fatal accident leads to sad consequences and that the danger in road traffic remains present.
