Selenskyj demands NATO membership: a way to peace with Russia?
Kiew, Ukraine - The Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj has made his willingness to negotiate with the Russian head of state Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that important actors such as the United States and European countries should be involved in the discussions. In an interview with the British journalist Piers Morgan, it became clear that Selenskyj is open to dialogue, but has a clear enemy attitude towards Putin. He describes the Kremlin chief as an enemy and does not want to give up his principles during possible negotiations. "We will definitely go to this meeting," said Selenskyj, "if this is the only way to bring peace to the citizens of Ukraine," reported OE24.at .
Selenskyj has also formulated conditions for a possible peace that also includes membership of Ukraine in NATO and security guarantees on the part of the United States. In a conversation with the US podcaster Lex Fridman, he confidently expressed that Donald Trump, who is known for his direct approaches, could make a decisive contribution to termination of the conflict. According to Selenskyj, Europe will support the position of Ukraine to create security guarantees before talks with Russia are initiated. Of course, the skepticism in Kiev remains with regard to an agreement with Russia in view of the feared unfavorable conditions that Trump could possibly obtain in the negotiations. This reported ZDF.de .
A remarkable aspect of Selenskyj's pragmatics is his suggestion to discuss NATO membership in exchange for the return of the occupied areas in Eastern Ukraine. However, this would be bound to other important conditions. Peace remains questionable without strong security guarantees and weapon systems from the USA and the EU. "Because Putin comes back without security guarantees," emphasized Selenskyj. In the midst of this tense situation, the last military engagement in the Course region of Spiegel of the continued disputes between the two countries, whereby new sanctions against Russia could also be regarded as a possible step to stabilize peace.
