Optimism for caravan tunnel: second tube open soon!

Current developments around the Karawankentunnel show progress on both sides of the state border. The Slovenian motorway operator Dars took a positive balance in a press conference in Laibach: the work on the new tube of the Karawanken tunnel on the Slovenian side is to be almost completed this year. The interior design and the installation of state -of -the -art safety devices are currently mainly running. At the end of the year, Dars named the realistic goal for the traffic release of the second tube, with some work will still be pending in the coming year. The total length of the tunnel is 7.9 kilometers, of which around 3,546 meters are in Slovenia. In order to remove the temporary traffic jams, both tubes, each offer two lanes per direction, should be open by the beginning of 2029 at the latest. However, financial problems due to road closures and misinformation contributed to a decline in income by 300,000 euros last year, reported ORF Carinthia.

New construction and security innovations

ASFINAG is pursuing projects in parallel ambitious when expanding the Karawanken tunnel. The full expansion was launched on September 18, 2018, which is co -financed by the EU. The aim is to end oncoming traffic on the highly frequented north-south connection between Austria and Slovenia in order to significantly increase traffic safety. At the moment, the second tube is broken out of both sides with almost 8 kilometers in length to improve the capacity of the A 11 Karawanken Autobahn. It is planned to reach the tunnel bitch on the Slovenian side for mid -2022. The goal is to release the new tube for traffic in February 2024 and to renovate the existing tube immediately afterwards. In addition, the new tube is comprehensively equipped with modern safety technology, including a highly complex system that enables temporary oncoming traffic within a very short time, as Tunnel reported online.
