New EU rules: Retinol in cosmetics-danger for young mothers!
The trend of retinol, a popular ingredient in cosmetics, is progressing rapidly - especially among young women. Beauty influencers on platforms such as Instagram and Tiktok advertise a variety of products that contain this vitamin A. However, the VKI (Association for Consumer Information) urgently warns of the risks of excessive application. "As a result, demand for young women has increased massively," said the VKI. Many do not know that retinol, also important for expectant mothers, can be harmful to health in large quantities.
The dangers of an overdose must not be underestimated! A permanent supply can have serious consequences - from jaundice to joint pain. The risk of pregnant and breastfeeding women is particularly high because vitamin A gets to the baby via breast milk. Therefore, the VKI underlines the need for a balanced diet that contributes to sufficient vitamin A supply without the risks of an additional supply by dietary supplements or cosmetic products, as well as OTS reported.
stricter regulations for cosmetics
In response to the growing popularity of Retinol, the EU has passed new legislation. From November 1, 2025, the permitted amounts of retinol will be greatly reduced in cosmetic products, and a clear labeling is mandatory. Products that do not adhere to these new limit values may no longer be sold. This is a crucial step to protect consumers and ensure that young women are not unnecessarily exposed to dangers, as Birgit Schiller, expert in pollutants at the VKI, emphasizes. "This means that young girls use ingredients such as retinol that their young skin does not yet need," said Schiller. The adaptation of the law makes the urgent need to clarify young users about safe skin care.
