Migration crisis 2025: EU with new challenges and decisions!
The European Union is prepared for unpredictable times in 2025 in view of the stable but problematic migration pattern. Michael Spindelegger, director of the ICMPD, said to publish the "Migration Outlook" that the EU had to develop innovative solutions for these challenges. This includes the externalization of asylum procedures and the establishment of return centers in third countries, especially since the return rate within the EU is alarming. At a time when the designated US President Trump has announced a restrictive immigration policy, more refugees from South America and Ukraine could come to Europe, which would further complicate the situation, reported the Wiener Zeitung .
causes of flight and return chances
Spindelegger warned that the EU should prepare for an increasing influx of Ukrainian refugees. If support is still missing, the EU directive could be tightened to the temporary protection in order to meet the possible situation of up to ten million pleading Ukrainians. The director also expressed concerns about the poor integration of the Ukrainian refugees into the labor market, where only about 20 percent of regular activity pursue. This urgently requires national measures.
In terms of Syria, the return of refugees is currently unrealistic. Sealing signals of reconstruction are needed in order to give Syrian migrants an incentive to return, continued Spindelegger. The current circumstances made it undesirable for many to return to their homeland. With a view to the challenges that an increasing number of migrants have, he also cited the statements of FPÖ politicians who had called for the abolition of the European Convention on Human Rights. He emphasized that migration within the framework of the constitution and international law had to be treated because tougher measures are unrealistic, said Spindelegger.
Michael Spindelegger was appointed General Director of the ICMPD on January 1, 2016 and brings extensive experiences in the field of international relationships that he gained in various political offices in Austria during his time, as on the page of the icmpd described. He formed national measures for integration and was jointly responsible for numerous migration policy initiatives in Austria and Europe.
