Fighting climate change: CO2 removal as a new solution in sight!
Potsdam, Deutschland - In an urgent appeal, Ottmar Edenhofer, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Illic Research (PIK), spoke to the possibility of artificial cooling of the earth in the second half of the century. In an interview with the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung", he explained that the combination of immediate reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and innovative methods for CO2 withdrawal from the atmosphere in the fight against climate change could be. Edenhofer referred to technologies such as CO2 vacuum cleaners that can filter greenhouse gases and store it safely inside the earth, as well as quickly growth from biomass for CO2 separation. According to Edenhofer, this could lower the temperatures and appear more fairer, since the industrialized countries are largely responsible for the climate problems.
EU measures and economic challenges
In addition, a team around Edenhofer at the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) presented an extensive concept to support the EU in the target activity of its climate goals. In view of the upcoming emission boundaries in various sectors from 2027, the EU has decided to drastically reduce CO2 emissions in the transport and heat sector. But in order to become really climate-neutral by 2050, large-scale CO2 withdrawals are necessary, as the study shows. These measures could cost the EU between 0.3 to 3 percent of global economic output, which raises significant economic questions.
The research team proposes the creation of a European carbon central bank that plays a crucial role in CO2 withdrawal. A central principle of these concepts is the subsidization of CO2 withdrawals, whereby the same high prices should apply as in the emission of CO2. However, Edenhofer and his team warn that not all withdrawal methods are permanently, which requires political challenges and close -maked risk management to ensure the efficiency of the measures. These clear indications that the climate crisis demands serious economic and political measures were published in the Financial Archives specialist magazine, as explained by MCC.
