Kickl and Stöjberg: Denmark and Austria want to radically reform migration!
Federal Minister Herbert Kickl from the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) is at the center of a heated political dispute in the run -up to possible coalition negotiations with the ÖVP. The crucial point of dispute? The Ministry of the Interior and the associated competencies in asylum and migration policy. While Kickl vehemently insists that the FPÖ does not give up the agenda asylum and migration, the ÖVP is also looking for influence in this sensitive area. In a provocative Facebook post, he compared the Austrian asylum policy with the Danish model, which he described as the "Denmark fortress". He asked the question of why the representatives of the ÖVP always claimed a strict asylum policy a shame of the economy, while Denmark show the opposite, such as .
Another critical aspect in Kick's asylum policy is the announcement that Austria will no longer accept refugees from resettlement programs, which further complicates the integration of asylum seekers. Kickl argues that the focus must be on the protection of those in need of protection. In contrast, the UNHCR is disappointed with these developments and emphasizes the need for resettlement places. Kickl sees the relocation, however, a "replacement" for a more effective migration policy and not an addition. With this change of course, Austria and Denmark take a pioneering role in the reform of European migration policy.
