Fight for digital freedom: Austria's censorship debate escalated!

In the current government program of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS, increased regulation of digital platforms and the further development of the controversial digital service Act are announced. Freedom EU MP Petra Steger criticizes this sharply and sees a great danger to freedom of expression in Austria. In their opinion, the planned legislation promotes a kind of digital mass surveillance and uses the pretext of combating disinformation to silence unpleasant opinions. "The Digital Services Act is the prestige project of the Leyen Commission," explains Steger and warns of the "censor fantasies of the EU", which are now to be implemented in Austria, as well as OTS reported.

Steger draws a worrying comparison to an incident in Romania, where a choice was canceled due to Tikok contributions and an entire country was plunged into a state crisis. In this case, the EU did not act as a defender of democracy, but on the contrary. This concern also nourishes from the fact that the Austrian government takes such measures as a model, which raises the question of whether this could not introduce a similar censorship system in Austria.

controls and transparency

According to the European Commission, the Digital Services Act aims to give users more control over their online content. In this way, users should receive more transparent information about why specific content is recommended. It is also intended that targeted advertising for minors is prohibited and sensitive data such as sexual orientation or ethnicity may no longer be used. These measures are designed to protect users from harmful and illegal content. In addition, the draft law provides faster procedures for removing unauthorized content to create a safe digital environment, such as Europarl.eu explained.

Overall, the government's plans and the reactions show that the area of tension between digital regulation and individual freedom is still a hotly discussed topic in Europe.
