Island shows serious ambitions to join the European Union. Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir has expressed concern about Trump's threat of annexing Greenland and emphasizes the close bonds that Iceland maintains with the Greenlanders. According to a current survey, 45 percent of Icelanders support an EU accession, while 35 percent are against and 20 percent neutral.

Before the crisis, Iceland had already submitted an application for accession after the financial crisis in 2008, but later decided to withdraw it.
