background to traffic accidents

The current tragedy focuses on the dangerous potential of road traffic. According to the data of the [European Parliament] (https://www.europarl.europa.eu/topics/de/article/20190410STO3615/ VERKSCHASTSTASTIKEN-ITEN-EU-INFOGRICK), thousands of people in the EU lose their lives or are seriously injured in the EU every year. Between 2010 and 2020, however, Europe recorded a decrease of 36 percent in the road traffic dead.

In 2019 there were 22,800 traffic fatalities, but in 2020 this number fell by 4,000. Preliminary statistics show that the fatalities are at a record low in 18 EU member states. Nevertheless, the problem of traffic safety remains relevant. The high number of injuries, which, in the context of the pandemic and the associated drop in traffic, are particularly worrying.

statistical insights

It is noteworthy that Sweden has the safest roads, with only 18 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, while Romania in 2020 had the highest rate with 85 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants. The average in the EU is 42 fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, compared to over 180 worldwide.

An interesting pattern is also shown in the dividing of the road. In 2018, 12 percent of the racing fats were between 18 and 24 years old, although this age group is only 8 percent of the population. At the same time, the proportion of over 65-year-olds in the statistics rose from 22 percent in 2010 to 28 percent in 2018. This development raises questions, in particular with regard to the safety of older road users.

Overall, the incident on the B134 illustrates the continued urgency to improve traffic safety and to reduce the tragedies caused by accidents.
