On December 6, 2024, WKÖ General Secretary Kopf underlines the opportunities of the EU Mercosurous Agreement for Trade and Climate Protection.

EU Mercosur Agreement: Now use the strengthening of trade relationships!

A significant trading step was decided today at the Mercosur summit! The EU Mercosury Agreement could revolutionize economic relations between Europe and South America. The Secretary General of the WKÖ, Karlheinz Kopf, emphasized the historical opportunity that is offered here: "Now is the perfect moment to successfully complete this agreement," he said. This agreement will not only help to diversify the EU trade relationships, but also strengthen the Austrian export industry and secure 32,000 jobs, such as Ots reported.

With the agreement, the EU could secure its access to important raw materials for the green turn, especially for technologies in wind power and solar energy. In addition, the Mercosur Agreement obliges the partner states to comply with the Paris climate agreement, to combat illegal deforestation and to reforest. This shows that the initiative not only focuses on economic but also ecological aspects in terms of the urgently needed international trade. At the same time, domestic agriculture is protected by limited customs quotas.

Modernization of the EU Chile Agreement

But that's not all! The modernization of the EU Chile Association Agreement was also positive. According to Karlheinz Kopf, this is "good news for the export country Austria", as the trade relationships between the EU and Chile can be further deepened. The domestic exports to Chile have almost doubled in the past ten years, which indicates the strength of the trade connections. The adjustments of the agreement will make it easier for Austrian companies to reduce existing barriers and to develop new markets. WKO reported that digitization and the increase in efficiency of the supply chains in an economically difficult environment are of crucial importance, especially in view of the current global uncertainties.

In summary, it can be said that both the EU Mercosurous Agreement and the modernization of the EU Chile Agreement represent significant steps for Austria's export sector. In view of the economic challenges of the present, an aggressive and modern trade policy is essential to use the market opportunities in growth regions and to strengthen the European economy.
