EU disappointment: three decades of membership under pressure!
EU disappointment: three decades of membership under pressure!
On January 1, 1995, Austria joined high expectations of the European Union, hoping for peace, security and preservation of its neutrality. But 30 years later, the facts show a different picture. "Today we have to find that the EU has not fulfilled many expectations," said Harald Vilimsky, the delegation manager of the freedom in the European Parliament. The violation of central promises, including the neutrality of Austria, as well as failure in the field of migration policy, raises doubts about the advantages of the EU accession. Vilimsky calls for a return to democratic principles and wishes that competencies from Brussels will be relocated back to the Member States, such as ots reported .
EU economic and monetary union under pressure
At the same time, the economic and monetary union, a result of the economic integration of the EU, has proven to be fragile and is currently calling for flexibility in its fiscal policy from the Member States. The euro, which is currently being used in 20 EU countries, was originally intended to promote economic stability and growth. However, the challenge of managing the debt created from the Covid 19 pandemic brings new risks. The European stability mechanism (ESM) and various political measures introduced according to the European state debt crisis are on the test, such as Europarl.europa.eu reported .
The pressure on the Member States grows with the required increase in the competencies of the EU Commission to monitor national budget strategies. While Denmark and the United Kingdom were exceptionally freed from the introduction of the euro, many Member States now see a clear need to revise the financial framework in order to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing economic landscape. According to current surveys, confidence in the EU is at a historical low.
