Bloody conflict in Sudan: Civilian population under cruel siege!
in Sudan, where there has been a bloody power struggle since April 2023, the humanitarian conditions are catastrophic. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo affects the Darfur region, where over 14,600 people have already died, as Amnesty International reports. So far, more than ten million people have fled from outbreaks of violence, which has led to the greatest internal displacement crisis worldwide. In Al Fashir, the last big city with government control, civilians suffer from siege, whereby they are exposed to attacks when they try to leave the city and residential areas are continuously shot at, as the Kleine Zeitung reported.
UN and human rights violations
The United Nations sharply criticized the parties to the conflict because they disregard humanitarian international law. According to Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, this disregard could be assessed as a war crime. He warned that the siege in Al Fashion will raise the suffering of the civilian population to a "catastrophic level", which exacerbates the precarious humanitarian Situation. The killing of three employees of the World Food Program (WFP) in an air raid is particularly shocking, which further tightened the tense situation, the Amnesty International .
Although the conflict lasts one year, the reactions to ongoing human rights violations are inadequate. Amnesty International calls on the European Union to take urgent measures in order to enable aid deliveries to this crisis region and to demand an end to violence against civilians. The need for humanitarian aid is enormous: 14 million children, i.e. half of the children in Sudan, are dependent on support. The EU has to get more involved in helping people in this difficult situation and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. The use of international aid is crucial to cope with the humanitarian crisis and protect the rights of the civilian population.
