Baltic states celebrate energy independence: end with Russia!
Vilnius, Litauen - On February 9, 2025, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania took a historical step towards energy independence by officially decoupling themselves from the Russian power grid. This step enables the Baltic states to synchronize their electrical networks with the European system, which ends the decades of dependency on Russia and strengthens their integration into the European energy market. As reported Econews , the synchronization process is supported by the EU with an impressive budget of 1.6 billion euros, whereby 1.2 billion euros come from EU funds. This ensures that the Baltic states have to suffer less from Russia's political and economic pressure.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the EU Commission, described this moment as a "symbolic victory over the Russian influence in the energy network". She announced in Vilnius: "We connect the Baltic states to our continental European power grid. The power lines to Russia and Belarus are cut. This means freedom: freedom of threats; freedom of blackmail." The Baltic states have also expanded safety devices to prepare themselves against possible Russian disinformation campaigns and sabotage files. Despite a slight increase in electricity costs for consumers, which is between 50 cents and one euro per month, energy independence is considered an important progress that also contributes to the integration of renewable energies.
