Vienna on the way to the solar power capital: reach new records!
Wien, Österreich - Vienna has made a remarkable progress in the use of renewable energies! Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and climate councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ) announced in a press conference that the city today announced the target brand of 250 Megawattpeak (MWP) to solar power, originally intended for the end of 2025. This energy could theoretically have a Viennese subway 600 times around the earth and is enough to supply around 72,000 households with clean electricity. The increase in solar power performance shows impressive results: five years ago, the capacity was only 50 MWP. 50 MWP was particularly installed on urban areas, which, according to those responsible, means that more than 57,000 tons of CO2 are saved annually.
The success story of the Viennese solar power offensive
The goals set are ambitious: Vienna plans to achieve an output of 800 MWP by 2030 - this corresponds to the electricity requirement of a quarter of all Viennese households. This is to be achieved through a number of tried and tested measures such as easier approval procedures, attractive grants and free advisory services. With these steps, Vienna takes a pioneering role in the expansion of photovoltaic systems (PV systems) nationwide. Christoph Dolna-Gruber from the Austrian Energy Agency confirmed in Vienna 13,146 PV systems that produce a total of 252 MWP, and praised the rapid progress compared to the once ambitious goals of 2021.
The city pursues in addition to the ecological and social goals, says Ludwig: "Our solar power offensive exceeds all expectations and once more proves: Vienna is the capital of the solar power!" The mayor Bettina Emmerling also emphasized the importance of climate protection in schools, where PV facilities on school buildings are supposed to create a new, environmentally friendly learning environment. With a uniform approach to promoting renewable energies and comprehensive advisory services, the balance sheet says: The sunstrom boom continues! Vienna relies on a future without fossil fuels and ensures that the city can develop independently of energy imports, as Karl Gruber also emphasizes from Vienna.
