Lack of snow ensures cancellations: only five out of nine skibo competitions successful!

This year's Skibo tour 2025 shows the challenges with which winter sports are faced. Of nine planned tour runs, only five actually took place due to lack of snow. The reasons for the cancellation of the remaining competitions are obvious: uncertain snow conditions made it impossible to carry out. According to skibo.at . The altitude meters do not count for disqualifications or "DID not-finish".

The ongoing documentation and adaptation of the medal height meters ensure that participants and organizers are always up to date. From a minimum participation of three competitions, an invitation to the skibo final event will be sent, which took place this year on April 4, 2025.

global challenges for winter sports

The problems that affect the skibo tour are part of a larger trend in winter sports due to climate change. Studies, such as those of the German Alpine Association from 2013, predict a critical future for ski areas. Again and again it is shown that the snow season below 2,000 meters has been shortened by up to 34 days compared to 1971. Deutschlandfunk Kultur reports that low-climate change and snow-free winter sport put pressure on the region in the long term.

Some communities are already considering future strategies without snow, while others invest in modern snow -making systems. Nevertheless, it turns out that the water and electricity consumption for artificial snow is environmentally harmful and a lot of energy is required. The challenges that winter sports have with climate change are unmistakable and will be decisive for the future of skiing in the Alps in the coming years.
