New exhibition About Below: Discover Vienna's mysterious channel world!

Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel, 1120 Wien, Österreich - On December 4, 2024, a multimedia info center was inaugurated in Vienna, which offers future visitors deep insights into the city's largest sewer construction project: the Wiental Canal. From January 9, 2025, interested parties can visit the exhibition "About Below" at the Gaudenzdorfer belt, which brings the history and technical aspects of the Viennese sewerage alive. Climate Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky described this project of the century as essential for water protection, since it will extend the Vienna river over nine kilometers by 2028 to improve water quality and prevent floods in heavy rain. The new channel will extend from Auhof to the Ernst-Arnold-Park, such as wien.gv.at reported.

technical innovation and environmental awareness

The new thing about this project is not only the extent of the channel, but also the innovative use of wastewater for energy generation. In Großmarktstraße 5, Vienna Channel Austria's first system for energy recovery has installed in a public sewer network. This uses a heat exchanger to use the constant temperature of the wastewater for heating and cooling office buildings. Especially in winter, when the waste water has temperatures around 11 degrees Celsius, this technology enables environmentally friendly use of the stored energy. In 2017, the system was modernized, so that a total of 240 jobs are now being cared for climate-friendly, as can be seen from the information from wien.gv.at

The info center will not only be a place of knowledge transfer, but also a fascinating experience by taking visitors on a journey through the history of the Viennese sewage system. Guided tours are planned that convey historical development and the current innovation approaches in wastewater management in an entertaining way. The expansion of the Wien Valley Canal will not only a technical masterpiece, but also an important step towards sustainable urban development and environmental awareness in Vienna.
