Climate waving in danger! Austria's heating systems urgently need to rethink!
The environmental protection organization Global 2000 has released alarming results of its current heat-turning check and states: Austria lags far behind when the climate goals are reached. According to Johannes Wahlmüller, climate and energy spokesman for Global 2000, the federal states lack clear and ambitious objectives for the exit from fossil energy and the implementation of climate-friendly heating systems. The association reports that only Vienna, Upper Austria and Styria have formulated significant strategies for climate neutrality 2040, while the other federal states have little progress. In many regions, only hesitant steps in the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions come into play, whereby a nationwide decline of 57 percent until 2030 will only be reached in Salzburg and Vorarlberg, but the target values are also left behind the expectations.
Another critical point is the stagnant progress in thermal renovation, which is indispensable for the achievement of the climate goals. Global 2000 calls for a doubling of the renovation rate, since the current rate of 1.4 percent remains far behind the necessary value of 3 percent. The conversion of the district heating systems to climate -friendly technologies is also inadequate: the majority of the district heating still comes from fossil fuels. In Vienna in particular, almost two thirds of the district heating of oil and gas are. Although the city is making progress in planning to change, the nationwide plans for implementation are largely unfulfilled. A master plan is urgently required to be able to reach the climate goals more efficiently and the citizens: not unnecessarily financially burden on the inside, such as ots.at reported.
